Italian Parents Take Legal Action To Evict Adult Son

Call it an Italian version of “failure to launch” syndrome – a couple in Venice has had enough from their 41-year-old son, who refuses to move out for their house. They are seeking legal help to persuade him to get out, according to BBC News.
“We cannot do it anymore,” the man’s father was quoted as saying,  his attorney Andrea Camp told the BBC. “He demands that his clothes be washed and ironed and his meals prepared. He really has no intention of leaving.”
For help, the unnamed Italian turned to Adico, a consumer association that has worked with similar cases. Earlier this month, the company persuaded another son to leave home. After he left, his parents changed the locks on the house.
It is not uncommon in Italy for grown children to continue living with their parents, especially during difficult economic times. But this couple say that’s not the case with their son, who they say has a high-paying job that could afford him independence. He simply refuses to leave the nest.
“My wife is suffering from stress and has to be hospitalized,” the father told the BBC. “[My son] has a good job but still lives at home.”
The son has received a letter informing him that he has six days to leave the house before his parents take further legal action. If he refuses, the lawyers will seek the equivalent of a restraining order against him for his parents.
It looks like this Italian “bamboccioni,” or “big baby,” will soon be paging through the classifieds for a new place to stay

What is Barack Obama up to today?  Send him a message about the importance of Freedom on the Internet.

Today President Obama nominated Judges to serve on the US Court of Appeals and the US District Court.   He also proclained National Public Lands Day.

President Obama is committed to creating the most open and accessible administration in American history. To send questions, comments, concerns, or well-wishes to the President or his staff, please use the form below.

I would like to make a statement in support of the importance of maitaining a high measure of freedom on the internet.  This of course should be moderated by acceptable social norms of the day.

Thank You!

Thank you for contacting the White House.
President Obama is committed to creating the most open and accessible Administration in history.  That begins with taking comments and questions from you, the American people, through our website.

What are the Australian Government's plans to censor the internet (the so-called "Clean Feed")

Clean Feed is a content filtration system used in the UK and Canada (where it's voluntary) that is being proposed by the Australian Government to force Internet Service Providers to censor the Internet for all Australian users.   It is in the form of some sort of filter in relation to child sexual abuse material; children accessing inappropriate material.  There are also plans to provide a list of banned child abuse material.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy's portfolio is responsible for this.

I also looked at the case against 'Clean Feed' at:

What place does censorship have in a democracy?

Freedom of speech is an integral part of keeping democracy 'honest'.  I believe though that Freedom of speech and censorship are two totally different things.

As little censorship as possible is the hallmark of a free, open and mature democracy.   Freedom of choice should always be paramount though guidance through ratings is always helpful.   Access to information though should always be free and not hindered.

But when is information not socially acceptable information.  There are certain things such as those regarding child pornography and violent and anti-social messages, which each society should decide, using a wide-ranging representation of it's culture, what it defines is socially acceptable behaviour at that particular time.  These rights of society must be safe-guarded for it's citizens.   It is also important that these are re-visited on a regular basis for review.

When will the NBN get to your place?  What are the Benefits?

There is no specific date for when the NBN is to reach the Gold Coast.

It's claimed that NBN will provide high speed broadband to 93% of Australia's premises.
This is what is claimed:
http://www.nbn.gov.au/for-households/why-is-it-important/

"households benefit from access to new online services and information and from the connection to the social community’.
Allen Consulting estimates that if the number of Australian households connected to the internet increased by 10 per centage points, these households would gain $2.4 billion a year in current prices (in terms of the change in the value of consumption that they are expected to obtain) through timesaving activities, including:
  • teleworking, online shopping,  remote work and study opportunities
  • information gathering and accessing services
  • price/product discovery
  • education and knowledge
  • access to social networking
  • media, entertainment and professional services
  • substitution of physical services to services delivered electronically
  • inclusion and engagement in the online community.
In addition to benefits to households, a 10 per cent point increase in Australians using the internet is estimated to produce an increase of 0.44 per cent to Australia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
There are also indirect benefits to other sectors as a result of increased household connectivity:
  • for businesses, the reduction in the costs of customer access and client servicing
  • for government, improved public sector efficiencies and the returns from greater economic activity
  • for community organisations, increased engagement/participation with community groups."

Week 8 - Tutorial Task

Report on the progress of uploading our one and a half to two minute audio-visual production using still images:

Week 3:

Progress

It was only after last weeks exercise that I suddenly became aware that the whole point of this task was to  understand the copyright system that was to be used when using Free Images and learn to use Creative Commons.

During tutorial this week, I continued to access Creative Commons to find more images for our audio-visual project, keeping copyright requirements in mind.  This means that when I copied the image I also copied all the copyright information into a word document that I was using to keep all the information together.   I also used searches for Free Images to access other sites like Bing but ended up going back to Creative Commons because I understood how to use that site.  The team discussed the importance of this, to ensure that we all went back over images and music we had copied for use and made sure that we had all the copyright and attribution details necessary

I wanted to find images in relation to Terms of Use and Copyright advices on various webpages such as Google, Yahoo, Facebook.  I found a few extras eg Nokia as well and we can decide on what we are using when we are putting our project together.

We decided that we would upload all images and data we were going to use onto the Facebook page.  This would make it easier for us all to see what was being collated.

Issues

I was trying to locate the copyrights to images I had downloaded in week 6 before I knew about the correct procedure for copyright requirements.  I spent a lot of time on this because I really liked the images I had found.  Unfortunately I was not able to and therefore we cant use those images.

Tara was also doing the same - finding images and their copyright.  She was also trying out a number of other free content sites such as Dreamtime.co and Shutterstock.com as we had found that material available on creative Commons artistically quite restrictive.

Meetings

Organising a time that the whole team could  meet was also a problem.  Whoever was available, met separately a number of times over the coming week to organise the material.

Getting close to putting it all together.

Wrap-up

We all met up at a Mac computer lab at Griffith uni.  We were going to use Final Cut Pro to put it all together (Crystal knew how to use that software) but that software was not on these computers.   No time for panic - iMovie was available - so necessity and the deadline ensured that we learnt fast.  Before we knew it , under our direction we had produced an audio-visual piece.  It had all fallen into place.

We didn't use all our images as we were constrained by the time limit and felt it would be too cluttered and distracting.  We also decided against suing voice recording and voice overs as it would have taken away from the message we were trying to present.

We have ensured that all the images, music and data have been attributed.  These can be found under the uploaded video on YouTube.

I would like to acknowledge and thank my team.  They were great - easy going, supportive and positive to the end.  Thanks Crystal and Tara.  We did it - and we're proud of it.  Our first production!

Week 8 - Response to Content

Report on some aspect of your essay preparation or class discussion on this weeks lecture and readings:

1.  Free Software and the Creative Commons

Lawrence Lessing created Creative Commons 2001 (licenses became available in 2002) because he was tired of major organisations telling the public (including him) what to do and how to do it ie the control they had over users.  Creative Commons is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting reasonable copyright..  this means that creators make  their work available to others on more flexible terms that is "some rights reserved" rather than "all rights reserved".  All content such as images, audio-visual etc is more freely available with the public good strongly in mind.  He was in support of a 'shared culture'.

According to Levinson (2009) the future of copyright will have to evolve to something closer to that of Creative Commons "i.e. the right to copy but not commercialise".

The idea of relaxing our copyrights in the interest of sharing, came from the Free Software Movement.  This was the common way of thinking of software developers in the early days - shen software was shared around freely and developed upon.  The main ideas in Free culture were - Community, Collaboration and Choice.

2. Why doesn't strict copyright make sense for some things

Creative people, groups, organisations who are not yet well-known or still developing their reputations find no or flexible copyright very helpful whilst establishng themselves.  It has proven to be beneficial in many cases eg YouTube - musicians, audio-visual producers, photographers.

3. What are the benefits of proprietary software versus free software?

Proprietary software often has free Help available; is easier and prettier to use for non-technical users.
Free Softwware is all about sharing and collaboration

4. Where does free software come from?

Contributions come from software writers and developers who still believe in Free culture.  They put their work on-line and make it Public Domain.

5. It is not illegal to share food or clothes or recipes, why should it be illegal to share software?

It shouldn't be illegal to share software but there should be degrees of recognition for the development and creative aspects of a piece of work, in the very least attribution to the creator. It's creator should be able to have the flexibility of deciding on the degree of availability, remix or commercial use of their work.

6. What is the difference between free and open software?

It's the same.

7. Why ifs free software important for all computer users?

It helps to moderate the market.

8. Try some open source software and report back.

I tried to go into OpenClipArt Library: http://www.openclipart.org/about

This is a site where Clip Art is shared.  The work is all in the Public Domain (through the Creative Commons Public Domain Certification Page) and its contributors must be willing to allow people to use their images with no strings attached.  There are no requirements to include attribution of the clipartist.

There are so many open software sites, I found general browsing very time consuming and confusing.  I think, for me, it would be most beneficial if I am actually creating something and need to access these sites.

Week 7 - Response to Content

How is Wikipedia Useful?

Advantages:

- easy to use
- pulls a lot of information together into one place
- gives detailed answers
- written in many languages.
- much of the information has cited sources/websites so it can be checked or followed through
- there is some good control over accuracy of information as there are many contributors who have specialised
   knowledge overviewing additions and changes
- lets you know if information is unreliable and whether an article is disputed so you can judge the trustworthiness
   of the info.
- it is not easy to write rubbish or junk on an article - Wikipedia filter it and send that contributor mail to warn them
   of what they have done

Disadvantages:

- unrelible when information is not cited and sources not given
- sometimes there is a lot of information and it's necessary to skim through
- is not academically acceptable so therfore can't cite as a source

It's very useful. The argument about it's validity is debateable. It is said that it can be "edited by anyone" (not strictly true), but there's so much moderation that the majority of the (very small) percentage of vandalism (as opposed to constructive edits) will be reverted and is usually quite blatant i.e. fairly obvious

From the high calibre of entries found for many subjects on Wikipedia, I would be surprised if the community of Wikipedia Editors isn't made up of a vast proportion of academics and/or highly respected professors/lecturers.

Finally, we are constantly reminded that academically we should always have more than one source for our work.  Problem solved.

Week 7 - Tutorial Task

Reporting progress in producing a video that can be embedded on my blog:

Week 2:

Development Process

The full team finally met in todays tutorial.   Crystal, who was not present at our initial pre-production meeting, was filled in on ideas and developments to date.

The week before, I had worked on the notes that I had made of our preliminary discussion in the tutorial and developed a story line for our project.  I had emailed the Story Board of our ideas to Tara for her input. The complete Story Board can be viewed at the end of this blog.

I was to email it to Crystal as soon as possible for her information.

Allocation of Tasks

As I had already researched and collated the data for each continent's internet usage comparing 2000 to 2011, we decided the next steps were as follows:

Tara - produce a Facebook page for our imaginary group, Information Fighters - IF - to see how many followers we would be able to attract and whether it would make any impact in a short time.

Crystal - a) create a logo for IF.
              b) find the music for our piece.

Ibolya - a) images for use with the statistics for each  continent.

Completed Tasks

The Facebook page was created as a Community page and to meet the concerns of our imaginary group, IF, we ensured that the appropriate Terms of Use were read before we agreed to them.

The music was selected and downloaded.

Problems

I had tried to access images and videos which were free to use under copyright regulations by using Creative Commons.  This website is a kind of search engine for images that have various levels of use allowed by their producers.  The basic level requires that all these images be available for use as long as they are attributed in your production.

I had difficulty accessing images through Creative Commons, so had been searching for Free Images  using Flickr and Bing.  I told the tutor of this and quite some time was spent with me trying to solve this problem.

We were still feeling quite disorganised and really had no idea how we were going to produce this.  Crystal advised us that she had a piece of software available that she would be able to use to pull all our images, data and music together.

Where will we be by next week ?  Good question..........
